The program to enlarge an existing 1,695 square foot library to 3,580 square feet presented a major concern for limited spatial impact on neighboring classrooms. In response, the new wall adjacent to the neighboring structure curves to minimize narrowing effects and provide vistas by eliminating the corners of a rectangular form. Penetrated by a round window tube that serves as a seat to induce reading, the curved wall also affords a nurturing interior space for young occupants. Blue-trimmed, off-white exterior walls of cement plaster over wood studs stand beneath asphalt composition roofing to match existing campus structures.

In addition to the round window, daylight enters from a north-facing skylight. Colorful banners suspended within the skylight modulate the scale of the room and contribute to sound reduction. Recessed perimeter lighting along the curved wall supplements natural sources. Extensive color research determined use of specific values and intensities of blue and gray throughout the interior of the new library. These colors prove beneficial for mental pursuits, encourage creative thought, and help relax the eyes. Interior and exterior responses to the program thus create an inviting, comfortable space to promote study and refresh the spirit.
The reconfigured floor plan presents a clear panorama of the entire library from the central circulation counter, including both entrances, stack areas, reading rooms, and computer workstations. Reached by steps or low ramp, a raised floor area designated for smaller children that places them at the same height as older students is also easily monitored from this staff position.
