RMC CONSTRUCTION OFFICE BUILDING

Fresno, California

Sited in an industrial park near an airport, this 4,650 square foot single-story building was programmed to house the offices of a commercial building contractor.  Corrugated aluminum siding over steel stud framing forms the exterior walls.   Interior walls of drywall, obscure glass, aluminum sheathing, and tilt-up concrete panels rise from floors of polished, stained concrete.   Supported by exposed open web steel bar joists, the roof is oriented to capture the winter sun through clerestories while providing solar protection during hot summers with shielding overhangs.

A reflection pond directs visitors to the interior atrium beneath an outstretched canopy of glass and steel.  Estimating offices with glass walls embrace the enclosed garden below an operable circular skylight, each space enjoying natural light and views of the surrounding greenery.  Opening to an enclosed garden with a reflection pond that transits inside and outside, the common work area is suffused by natural illumination.

The rise and drop of ceiling height, together varied wall and skylight glazing, combines with the reach of glass and metal panels to create an extensive interplay of inner movement.  Water elements and landscaping buffer the sights and sounds of the industrial neighborhood, transitioning to a quiet and meditative interior environment in which business is a natural pleasure.
