INTERIOR SYSTEMS
Fresno, California    1995

Built for an interior design firm in central California, this remodeling for Interior Systems  converted a nondescript suburban ranch-style house to commercial use.  On a limited budget, the program called for correction of several structural deficiencies and preparation of a readily recognizable but low-maintenance building representative of a somewhat avant-garde sales inventory.  The architectural result focuses the mind on the idea of design as the means of entering the business space.

Galvanized sheet metal and weathered steel form the palette for this whimsical studio.  Angled walls clad in these materials create a striking visual impact that is critically important to the business image.   The metal surfaces reflect the changing colors of daylight, mirrors the sunsets, and undertake the bluish tints of the evening sky.  A winged steel frame with canvas petals welcomes visitors as they stroll alongside a raised reflecting lacuna.  The projecting display windows catch they eye by reversing angles on an adjoining wall.  Landscaped gardens and fenced exterior terraces hold outdoor stock such as large pots, oversized statuary, etc.  Through this careful orchestration of line and light, a customer knows mentally what to expect from the services of the firm by the time they reach the front door.
